Scripture: Psalm 36
1 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes until his iniquity be found to be hateful.
3 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise and to do good.
4 He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.
5 Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reaches the clouds.
6 Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, preserve man and beast.
7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! Therefore, the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
8 They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house, and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.
9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.
10 O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee, and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 Let not the foot of pride come against me and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.
12 There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down and shall not be able to rise.
“Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.” — Psalm 36:5 (KJV)
Life is a journey filled with choices, and each path we take is governed by spiritual laws—blessings for those who walk in God’s way and consequences for those who reject His truth. Psalm 36 presents a striking contrast between the wicked and the righteous, offering wisdom on how to remain under God’s divine protection.
The Curse of the Wicked
David begins this psalm with a somber reflection on the heart of the wicked:
- “The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.” (Psalm 36:1)
- The wicked deceive themselves, indulging in iniquity without remorse (v. 2-3).
- They devise mischief, setting themselves on a path that leads to destruction (v. 4).
The curse of the wicked is spiritual blindness. Without the fear of the Lord, they are cut off from His wisdom and guidance, ultimately leading to their downfall:
- “There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.” (Psalm 36:12)
In contrast, those who trust in the Lord experience His unfailing love and abundant provision:
- Protection and Refuge: “How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” (Psalm 36:7)
- “They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house, and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.” (Psalm 36:8)
- Divine Illumination: “For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.” (Psalm 36:9)
Psalm 36 teaches several key principles:
- The Fear of the Lord is Essential – Those who reject God live in self-deception, while those who revere Him walk in wisdom. (Proverbs 9:10)
- God’s Love is a Refuge – No matter how dark the world gets, we can always find safety in His presence. (Psalm 91:1-2)
- True Satisfaction Comes from God Alone – The world offers fleeting pleasures, but only God provides eternal joy. (John 4:14)
- The Righteous are Sustained by God’s Faithfulness – His mercies never fail, and He will continue to uphold those who walk uprightly. (Lamentations 3:22-23)
Psalm 36 assures believers that God’s love is not temporary but everlasting: “O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee, and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.” (Psalm 36:10)
Psalm 36:10 is a divine promise—those who seek the Lord will never be forsaken. His faithfulness extends to the heavens beyond what we can comprehend.
